For the last seven years, SUNY New Paltz has been hosting Faces of Engineering. This expo has been put together to expose today's students to the wonderful world of engineering. This experience could possibly change a student's educational path and even the rest of their lives.

One activity students participated in was building a DC motor using the following items:

  • D battery
  • Rubberband
  • Wire
  • Magnets
  • 2 Safety pins

The wire gets wrapped into a coil and spans the distance from end to end of the battery and rests in the loops of the 2 safety pins.  The magnets push the coil and once the coil passes the halfway point, it then gets pulled making the coil continue to rotate.

I'll show you who's boss you dirty rotten motor... Just look at this student's focus.

Here is a video clip of some students hard at work- just look at them go.

If properly completed, this is how the motor will look and work. As you can see, it continually spins!
