6/2 - Wallkill 1, Cornal 5 (Section IX Championship)

SLATE HILL, N.Y. — Alyssa Bua was the difference for Cornwall Saturday as the Green Dragons defeated Wallkill High 5-1 for the Section 9, Class A softball championship.

Wallkill, which handed Cornwall (20-1) its only loss in an early-season meeting, didn’t encounter the ace hurler then.

“Today we faced the best pitcher we faced all year, without a doubt. We haven’t seen anyone as good as her all year,” Panthers coach Chris Canosa said. “She was deceptively quick and had a nice rise ball.”

Bua struck out 12, walked none and allowed just three hits in leading Cornwall to its third title in three years and the first since 2010. She fanned seven straight at one point.

“No one has struck us out 12 times all year,” Canosa noted. “This is the first time we didn’t put the ball in play as we have all year and that’s a credit to her.”

The bottom of the Wallkill lineup was especially susceptible, unable to lay off Bua’s riser.

“We tried to have them choke up a little at the plate. She was throwing a riser and the ball was coming up through the zone,” Canosa said.

“We were trying to get them to lay off it but, you know, it’s easier said than done. When you don’t see that all year round and, all of a sudden, here it is and someone is as good as that, it’s a tough adjustment to make and especially a tough adjustment to make at this game.”

Jennifer Valicenti singled to center to start the game for Wallkill, which didn’t get another hit until Lisa Bouffard lined a solo homer to left center with one out in the seventh inning.

“I’m not sure what that pitch was,” Bouffard said. “It might have been a rise. She threw a lot of them.”

Kaitlyn Valicenti followed Bouffard’s shot with a single, but Bua got a popup and a strikeout to end the game.

“When Kait singled off the second baseman’s glove, I thought ‘Maybe?’” Bouffard said.

Cornwall took charge in the second when Jackie Galati doubled and Emily Darcy singled with one out and Brittany Malloy drove in both with a hard shot down the left field line.

The Dragons tacked on another run off a wild pitch in the third. In the fifth, Ally Galati reached on her second slap single and Alyssa DiMaio followed with a two-run homer to center.

Senior Caitlyn Callas took the loss, giving up eight hits, and striking out four in her final game as a Panther.

“I think we had confidence coming into this game,” Bouffard said.

“The kids’ spirits were really high, We were confident,” Canosa agreed.

The Panthers, who finished the season 15-6, were coming off Thursday’s emotional 5-4 semifinal victory over Marlboro. The Dukes rallied from a 4-0 deficit, but had the tying run thrown out at the plate to end the game.

“We were kind of content after beating Marlboro. That was a big win,” said Bouffard, suggesting a possible letdown.

Bua, however, was the real problem.

“We set our goals to win our division, to win the MHAL (Mid-Hudson Athletic League) championship and to try to challenge for a sectional title,” Canosa said.

Wallkill captured the division, lost to Marlboro 3-2 in the league semifinals and made it to its first-ever sectional final.

“Everything came together,” Canosa added. “It was such a great season.”

“I think we accomplished a lot from where we were last year,” Bouffard remarked. “We went from 8-10 to 15-6. That’s a really big accomplishment. I’m really proud of them.”
