    Bicycle Education at Ostrander

While participating in the last years .N.Y.S P.E. conference, Ms. McGowan received a certification in "Bike Driver's Ed."

This intensive training aim to educate teachers on how to teach bike safety skills to elementary students.  As a participant Ms. McGowan learned about the different types of bike crashes young cyclist typically encounter, and how to avoid them. She also learned how to fit helmets appropriately and how to adjust a bike for a safe, comfortable ride.  The course also discussed several fun on bike skills and drills that taught traffic safety.

Once this course was completed Ms.McGowan was able to borrow 30 bikes and helmets from Bike NY to teach our Ostrander students.

The students learned about the A,B,C and Q of biking and a lot more.  A field trip to ride the bikes to the rail trail was scheduled but had to be cancelled.

Students, remember what you have been taught and we hope to see you at the Bike Rodeo in the spring.  Every student at Ostrander will receive a free bike helmet.

Continue to ride, be safe and have fun.
