Lt. Mark Dooley

***Dooley Scholarship Applications will be available in February. Essays due to Coach Gravelle by March 1st. Anyone interested in the Lt. Dooley Race of Honorapplications are available at www.southernulsterrotary.org

Mark Dooley attended Wallkill High School and graduated in 1997. He ran under Coach Leo Sladewski and XC/Outdoor Coach Eric Mclaud. Mark was killed on September 19th, 2005 in Ramadi, Iraq when his humvee was hit by an undetected road side bomb.

Coach McLaud re-named The Will to Win Award to the Lt. Mark Dooley Will to Win award as a tribute to Dooley and his passion for running, both in High School and throughout the remainder of his life.

Coach Sladewski and Coach Gravelle were very close friends with Mark. Mark often came back to visit them at Plattekill and would come to practices to get a work out with his former coach and friends. Dooley often spoke to the athletes about life, lessons learned and his desire to succeed at his career as well as a runner. Both Gravelle and Sladewski work hand in hand with the Southern Ulster Rotary in planning/organzing/working the Race of Honor held each spring.

Jennifer Gravelle heads the Mark Dooley Scholarship committee each spring. She and Sladewski choose an athlete or athletes to receive the scholarship. The nominations are then taken to Mark's parents, Peter and Marion Dooley, and the Rotary for final approval.
