Who are the judges?
Judges are primarily educators, both retired and from other buildings in the district. Each project is assessed by two judges. Each grade level is assigned two judges and all projects in that grade levels are evaluated by the same two judges.
What is the judge looking for?
Below are the six questions judges will consider. Scores for each question range from
0 to 3, with 0 being the lowest and 3 being the highest possible score for each question. The score sheets from each judge are combined to derive your student's final total score.
Visual Display: How well is the project constructed and organized?
Achieving the Scientific Objective: Did the student ask a question and accurately find an answer?
Research Information: Did the student find accurate research sources for their project?
Oral Presentation: How complete is the student's knowledge and use of resources?
Interview: Did the student completely understand and explain their project?
Overall Impression: What was the overall impression of the student's project?
How is high honors decided?
Students who submit an individual project and score in the top 20 percent of their grade level will receive a high honors ribbon of distinction. Students who submit an individual project cannot fairly be judged alongside students who submit group projects, therefore group projects are not eligible for a high honors ribbon of distinction. In the case of a tie, each student with a score in the top 20 percent will receive high honors, even if the number of winners exceed 20 percent of participants for that grade level. Every student will receive a participation ribbon as well as an award certificate for participating in the science fair.
